Tucked away in a sheltered mountain valley lies this hideaway and wellness retreat, surrounded by unspoilt nature. Nestled within the stunning mountain landscape of the Wetterstein and Karwendel ranges, this English castle – built between 1913 and 1925 by Mary Isabel Portman – stands as a haven of tranquillity and relaxation.

The Kranzbach stands alone on a 130,000 m² mountain meadow, surrounded by forests belonging to the Bavarian State Forestry Authority. The listed hotel complex is accessible only via a toll road. The surrounding undulating meadows – a unique feature created by glaciers – are a protected nature reserve.

The Kranzbach has its own mountain spring, the water from which is so pure and clear that it can be consumed without treatment. The natural landscape and the tranquillity all around are the Kranzbach’s most valuable attractions, alongside the ‘Meditation House by Kengo Kuma’. Situated 200 metres from the hotel, this architectural highlight serves as a place of tranquillity in the heart of the forest.

There are few places and moments where body and soul can be brought into harmony so easily. This is also reflected in the philosophy of the Kranzbach cuisine. Head chef Michael Eigl prefers to cook with fresh produce and herbs, which he picks directly from the Kranzbach herb garden, tended by the hotel’s own herb expert. Meat and fish are sourced from the region, and game from the Karwendel Mountains. Michael Eigl knew he wanted to be a chef from the age of 12. He has been head chef at Kranzbach since December 2019 and leads a team of 30.

There are four restaurants to choose from, all serving the same menu. The Panorama Restaurant, with its large panoramic windows, offers stunning views of the Karwendel Alps and the Zugspitze. In the Herb Garden Restaurant, you can look out over the herb garden, which features around 130 different herbs and medicinal plants, some of which are rare varieties. The Greenhouse brings nature even closer to you – both inside and out. The panoramic views are unique here too. The Fireplace Room is particularly cosy and homely in winter. In the hotel’s smallest restaurant, you can feel completely at ease.

Very few hotels have their own in-house breakfast bakery, where Sebastian Pilgram conjures up over 80 different types of bread, rolls and pastries every day. The in-house patisserie spoils guests with cakes, strudels and tartlets that look like little works of art.

Last but not least, certified sommelier Marko Hass guides you impressively through the world of wine with great passion and expertise.
