PARIS. The tyre manufacturer Michelin has described the year 2023 as a turning point for its guide. In addition to the key as a new hotel award, new restaurant guides have been published for eleven destinations, according to a statement from the company. Further new editions are to be added in 2024. In addition, more and more restaurants have been awarded a green star for sustainability.
New editions are planned for Busan in South Korea, Brazil and Mexico in 2024. The first selection of the year, Great Britain and Ireland, will be announced on 5 February. For the first time, the ceremony will take place outside London - in Manchester. Second in line is Belgium on 26 February, followed by Portugal on 27 February, which will stand out from Spain for the first time with its own selection. The Michelin Guide for France will be published on 18 March, shortly before the edition for Germany is published.
After four years of reorganisation, the Michelin Guide considers digitalisation to be complete. According to the company, the platforms now have 5.5 million subscribers. More than 5,000 remarkable hotels in 120 countries are now listed there. This selection is available free of charge on the MICHELIN Guide website and app. From now on, the Michelin Key will recognise exceptional establishments from this selection every year. The key will be awarded after one or more stays carried out anonymously by the Guide's selection teams. Six destinations will be announced in the first half of 2024, with France being the first destination to announce its winners.
In the past year 2023, new editions of the Michelin Guide were published for Mendoza and Buenos Aires in Argentina, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam, Hangzhou in China, Izmir and Bodrum in Turkey, Poznań in Poland, the state of Colorado and the city of Atlanta in the United States and Latvia.
No fewer than 13 restaurants with "exceptional cuisine that is worth a special journey" have now been awarded three stars, including a restaurant in Slovenia for the first time. 48 restaurants were awarded two stars for the first time for their "outstanding cuisine that is worth a diversion". These include the first in Poland and the first in Thailand to be run by a female chef. 364 "very good restaurants" have been awarded a Michelin star, including the very first in Abu Dhabi to receive such an honour.
Not forgetting the 450 or so new Bib Gourmands, which have been recognised for their "exceptionally good food at moderate prices". Finally, 505 green Stenre nue or repeated stars have been awarded, which stands for sustainability and environmentally friendly practices.
The Green Star aims to recognise the Michelin Guide's commitment to promoting more sustainable practices. Its aim is to promote and raise awareness of environmental protection throughout the catering industry. The establishments that receive this award become true ambassadors of responsible principles among their peers and set an example for every generation. The chefs demonstrate the range of new gastronomic approaches that are now as important to foodies as the culinary experience itself.
The Michelin Guide has published restaurant ratings for more and more countries, cities and regions around the world. The total number of Michelin-starred restaurants has been growing steadily since 2016, reaching a high of 3,490 in 2023. The number of three-star restaurants has been growing steadily since 2020, reaching a high of 143 in the 2023 editions. The number of two-star restaurants in 2023 exceeded the previous high of 493 in 2021. It has been rising again since the 2022 edition. The number of one-star restaurants has been rising continuously since 2015. It reached a high of 2,854 in 2023.
