Plaza Athenée strips Imbert of his head chef role
PARIS. The luxury hotel Plaza Athénée has relieved Jean Imbert, the head chef of its Michelin-starred restaurant, of his position. The hotel management stated that this decision was taken following allegations of domestic violence made against him. The Plaza Athénée’s management simply expedited the process, as Jean Imbert’s contract was due to expire in June anyway. However, the collaboration is set to continue at a different level. Imbert, who is also referred to in the media as the “chef to the stars”, is to serve as “artistic director” for the establishment, General Manager François Delahaye confirmed to the AFP news agency. The restaurant may also be renamed, though no decision has yet been made. Delahaye acknowledged that the restaurant’s guest numbers had suffered somewhat since the allegations came to light.
Imbert had previously withdrawn from the management of other restaurants under his leadership. Among other things, last year he relinquished responsibility for a restaurant run in partnership with the fashion house Dior, which is now managed by Yannick Alleno.
The allegations against Imbert include claims of physical and psychological abuse by at least five former partners. The Versailles public prosecutor’s office is investigating three of these cases. Imbert denies all allegations. Among others, former Miss France Alexandra Rosenfeld accuses him of breaking her nose in 2013, a claim she has backed up with medical records. Other former partners accuse him of slapping, severe verbal abuse and psychological control, as well as extreme jealousy. Actress Lilia Salet filed a complaint alleging false imprisonment, psychological pressure and physical violence, relating to incidents between 2012 and 2013. Former employees describe him as a man with two faces. He is said to have become violent in the kitchen and thrown plates.
