Issue for 2025 for Athens cancelled

PARIS. The Michelin Guide is expanding its tests in Greece. According to a press release, in addition to restaurants in Athens, restaurants on the island of Santorini and in the city of Thessaloniki will also be rated in future. This will take place with the 2026 edition, but the publication of new ratings for Athens in 2025 will be cancelled. All new ratings are to be published together in the second half of 2026.

As a timeless meeting point between ancient heritage and contemporary creativity, Athens is constantly evolving, according to the Michelin Guide. The gastronomic scene reflects the city itself and is multi-layered, dynamic and full of contrasts. For the Michelin Guide, Santorini is characterised by local ingredients such as Santorini cherry tomatoes, yellow broad beans and Assyrtiko wines. As Greece's historic northern port, Thessaloniki's cuisine is characterised by the effects of trade, migration and cultural exchange. Influences from the Balkans, Asia Minor, the Mediterranean region and the city's Sephardic-Jewish heritage are united in it, according to the press release.

Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guide, explains: "By adding Athens, Santorini and Thessaloniki to our selection, we are emphasising the remarkable vitality of the Greek gastronomic scene. Each of these destinations is characterised by a unique identity, shaped by history, regional produce and the creativity of the chefs. The new selection puts the spotlight on a dynamic country whose gastronomy continues to inspire, enrich and attract travellers from all over the world."

Andreas Fiorentinos, Secretary General of the Hellenic National Tourism Organisation, added: "We are delighted to welcome Michelin to Athens for the third consecutive year in partnership with the Hellenic National Tourism Organisation and are thrilled to introduce two new Greek destinations to the international gastronomy community. Santorini, one of the most recognised destinations in the world, also offers a sophisticated and distinctive culinary scene. Thessaloniki, on the other hand, showcases its rich gastronomic heritage that has evolved over centuries as a historical melting pot of cultures."
