Favourites of the year 2025

FAS: Thomas Schanz voted chef of the year

Critics of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung choose their favourite chefs and winemakers of the year 2025

FRANKFURT AM MAIN. The food critics of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung have once again chosen their "favourites of the year" this year. Jürgen Dollase is responsible for the gastronomic awards, while Stephan Reinhard has selected the winemakers and wines of the year.

Thomas Schanz from Restaurant Schanz in Piesport was honoured as Chef of the Year. He continues to be full of energy. He is characterised by dishes that are already classics or could become classics. Rising star of the year is Christoph Kunz with his KOMU in Munich, which he opened in summer 2023. Instead of overwhelming, there is esprit and the rare ability to get straight to the point, says Jürgen Dollase.

The Schwarze Adler in Oberbergen was chosen as Restaurant of the Year. The restaurant, which is as classic as it is relaxed, cultivates classic gastronomy like no other with fine products, masterful preparations, the best service and an incredible selection of wines.

Game chefs of the year for the FAS are Frederik and Harald Rüssel from Rüssels Landhaus in Naurath. Their handling of game is so substantial, precise and flavoursome that the organic product game takes on a new finesse, according to the statement. The vegetable chef is Time Fritsche from La Vie by Thomas Bühner in Düsseldorf. Timo Fritsche shows many new ideas there. It's about more than just demonstrative vegetarianism, but about culinary pleasure and the emancipated kind.
