Guide Michelin 2025
Hungary: Two new Bib restaurants
Hungary, Guide, Michelin
Michelin Guide rates 78 restaurants in Hungary
(27 October 2025) - The Michelin Guide has published its 2025 edition for Hungary. The guide recommends a total of 78 restaurants: 36 in Budapest and 42 outside the capital. These include two restaurants with two stars, eight restaurants with one star, 13 Bib Gourmand restaurants (including two new additions) and 55 other recommended restaurants (including eight new additions). Six restaurants receive the green star, one of which is a new addition this year.
"We are very pleased to announce that ten restaurants have been included in the Hungarian selection for 2025," said Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guide. "In this day and age, it is particularly gratifying that two of them are included in the Guide with the Bib Gourmand award, which recognises their commitment to high-quality cuisine at a fair price. Highlights of this year's selection include our Restaurant of the Year, Padi in Rátka, a wonderfully modern restaurant in a beautiful vineyard setting, and the inclusion of the MICHELIN-starred restaurant Pajta in the MICHELIN Green Star Community for its outstanding sustainability criteria."
Stars
Stars are awarded to restaurants that offer outstanding cuisine. Five universal criteria are taken into account: the quality of the ingredients; the harmony of flavours; the mastery of cooking techniques; the personality of the chef reflected in his cuisine; and, just as importantly, consistency both across the menu and over time.
Platán Gourmet in Tata and Stand in Budapest will retain their two-star status for 2025.
The eight existing one-star restaurants will also all be re-certified for 2025. These are:
- Babel, Budapest
- Borkonyha Winekitchen, Budapest
- Costes, Budapest
- essência, Budapest
- Pajta, Őriszentpéter (also new with a green star)
- Rumour by Jenő Rácz, Budapest
- Salt, Budapest
- 42 in Esztergom
Bib Gourmand
The Bib Gourmand award recognises restaurants that offer high-quality food at a fair price. For 2025, two new restaurants will receive the Bib Gourmand award - both are located in Budapest.
Cabrio, tucked away in a quiet city square, is a natural wine bar with vintage flair, a green terrace and a trendy, relaxed atmosphere. It offers a carefully curated selection of 100% natural wines from all over Hungary and Europe and combines them with a creative, seasonal menu of small dishes - such as roasted celeriac carpaccio or salmon trout tartare with green gazpacho. With a knowledgeable and friendly team and a focus on flavourful dishes to share, it is fast becoming an insider tip for wine lovers and connoisseurs alike.
The 94' Konyha & Bar, unassumingly located, serves lively, Vietnamese-inspired cuisine in a minimalist, inviting ambience. The creative menu includes dishes such as fragrant pho and the signature dish 94' Gohan - a fusion of beef, fried rice and XO sauce - as well as other Asian-inspired classics. With a central bar, glimpses of the open kitchen and a reasonably priced lunch menu, this unpretentious gem is perfect for a relaxed meal, best rounded off with a strong Vietnamese coffee.
These two restaurants join the eleven restaurants that have retained their Bib Gourmand award from last year:
- Anyukám Mondta, Encs
- Casa Christa, Balatonszőlős
- Goli, Budapest
- Iszkor, Mályinka
- N28 Wine and Kitchen, Budapest
- Kistücsok, Balatonszemes
- Macok Bistro, Eger
- Morzsa, Pécs
- Platán Bisztró, Tata
- Sparhelt, Balatonfüred
- Újváros Bisztró, Szarvas
Recommendations
For the first time: BiBo Budapest is located on the roof of a hotel and offers a fantastic view over the river to Budapest Castle. Both the menu and the wine list combine Hungarian and Spanish influences, with dishes to share and sophisticated cocktails. There is hardly a more relaxed place to dine than the terraced riverside terrace of the modern Dereszla Bisztró in Bodrogkeresztúr, in the heart of the wine-growing region. Modern Hungarian dishes present ingredients from carefully selected suppliers.
At Fausto's , chef Fausto Di Vora can proudly look back on over 30 successful years in the city. After moving from Pest to Buda, his elegant restaurant with a glassed-in terrace is the perfect place to savour delicious Italian dishes. Located just a stone's throw from the water on the south bank of Lake Balaton in Fonyód , the cosy restaurant at the Lake offers rustic, flavourful small dishes in an ambience with local flair. Majorelle in Budapest is located in an impressive five-storey building with balconies. All the Moroccan classics can be found here, and chef Saad imports his spices directly, so the dishes delight with authentic combinations of spicy and sweet flavours.
The Sauska Tokaj winery is located on the hillside in Rátka and is home to Padi, a stylish restaurant with a terrace overlooking the vineyards. Refined, appealing dishes are perfectly accompanied by wines from the region. The Padi is also the winner of a special award - see below. Traditional, home-made dishes from the past are the inspiration at Petrányi Csopak. Situated high up on the hillside in Csopak, it looks out over a vineyard to Lake Balaton in the distance. Located in a restored Victorian townhouse in Szeged, the Tiszavirág has a cosy bar, a covered courtyard terrace, elegant rooms and even a small spa. The dishes have a traditional Hungarian core, but are presented with a refined look.
Green star
The Green Star recognises restaurants that are at the forefront of the industry in terms of sustainability - restaurants that combine culinary excellence with initiatives aimed at minimising their impact on the environment. The restaurants that impress the inspectors the most are included in the "MICHELIN Green Star Community". There, they are encouraged to share their innovative and inspiring visions, promoting dialogue and collaboration to make progress and help shape the future of gastronomy. These restaurants are a source of inspiration for both foodies and the catering industry as a whole.
The members of this year's community are:
- Graefl Major Kétútköz, Poroszló
- Natura Hill, Zebegény
- Onyx, Budapest
- Pajta, Őriszentpéter - New
- Salt, Budapest
- Villa Kabala, Szigliget
The Pajta restaurant in Őriszentpéter, already recommended in the guide, has been part of the Green Star Community since 2025. Nestled in the picturesque Őrség National Park, close to the Austrian-Slovenian border, Pajta is the most remote country restaurant in Hungary with a MICHELIN star. Founded by Flóra and Ferenc in a small barn (or pajta), the restaurant has evolved into a nature retreat, complete with a location surrounded by meadows, lodges with forest views and a sauna nestled in the woods. The menus change with the seasons and celebrate traditional Hungarian dishes with products from the surrounding region. Fermentation and pickling add a welcome touch to the flavourful creations.
Special awards
While the Michelin Guide's culinary awards are given to a restaurant as a whole, the special awards go to outstanding individuals and teams whose endless passion and considerable skill make a visit to a restaurant an unforgettable experience.
This year's winners are:
- Opening of the Year: Máté Gerák at Padi in Rátka. This elegant, modern restaurant, a favourite with wine lovers and foodies alike, is located in an equally impressive building on a hillside overlooking the vineyards of the winery to which it belongs. The open-plan kitchen adds to the atmosphere, and chef Máté Gerák leads a team whose menus are inspired by the surrounding region and fresh produce.
- Young chef of the year - Dávid Pallag at Rutin in Budaörs. The friendly couple Dávid and Fanni run this intimate little restaurant together. Fanni looks after the guests, while Dávid is in charge of the kitchen. He has a passion for traditional family recipes and uses these, along with fond childhood memories, to connect with guests through his cooking. His dishes convey a sense of well-being and the accompanying stories round off the experience perfectly.
- Service Award - Róbert Ráduly and the team at UMO in Budapest. Part modern hotel atrium and part enclosed courtyard, this Latin American restaurant offers a wide selection of dishes, gins and wines, enhanced by the incredibly friendly team. It's a real pleasure to watch the kitchen and service team working together, and the dishes are always served with a smile, making the experience unforgettable.
- Sommelier award - Norbert Varga at the two-star restaurant Stand in Budapest. This eye-catching, modern restaurant boasts a central, glass-fronted kitchen, refined modern cuisine and a lively atmosphere that is enhanced by the friendly service team. Part of this team is sommelier Norbert, who combines charisma with a wonderful sense of humour and sometimes a pinch of cheekiness. He dispels many preconceptions and the formality often associated with the world of sommeliers by chatting animatedly and describing each wine with such passion.
