BERLIN. 11 years on from eins44, restaurateur Jonathan Kartenberg announced the end of eins44 in its current form in April 2025. He says: "After 11 years in which the catering industry has been battered by lockdowns, coronavirus pains, inflation and the energy crisis, I no longer felt my own concept." He prescribed himself a new start.

Over the past five months, Kartenberg has scrutinised and redefined his restaurant. Kartenberg says: "I found it difficult to recognise myself and looked for arguments as to why I would go to a restaurant today. My conclusion: I'm bringing old companions, and even more so friends, on board." With star chefs Tim Tanneberger and Sebastian Leyer, Kartenberg promises not only high quality and creativity, but also the joy of affordable gastronomy.

With his restaurant manager Hannes Hinz and the two chefs, the restaurateur has not only adapted his precise idea of a menu, but also the concept of service. With a fixed menu price of 60 euros net for five courses, Kartenberg promises good value for money, with which he wants to make sophisticated cuisine tangible and open it up to a wide audience, regardless of VAT debates.

It is the result of over 15 years of gastronomic experience in Berlin and an absolute focus on what he was missing alongside the classic concept of Irma la Douce. While Kartenberg has consciously and consistently focused on à la carte dishes there since day one, he now wants to realise his idea of a menu at eins44, which the creative chefs are free to implement. Kartenberg promises: "Most of the dishes will be served directly from the kitchen and no other component of the evening will be left to chance."
