Two restaurants in Rio de Janeiro and two in São Paulo receive first star

Brazil: Number of Michelin-starred restaurants grows to 25

(20 May 2025) - The Michelin Guide has published its restaurant ratings for Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The guide recommends a total of 149 restaurants, 18 of which are new to the selection. Five restaurants are rated with two stars. Four restaurants receive their first star. Five are included in the group of Bib Gourmand restaurants. In addition, the three restaurants already awarded a green star retain their award.

Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guide, says: "The gastronomic level of Brazil - reflected in a thousand nuances in these two great cities - continues to show personality and constant progress, in addition to the skills of the young talents that are discovered every year - male and female chefs who apply the latest techniques to both traditional and more innovative recipes. This search for excellence in service and sommellerie also has a very positive impact on the customer experience."

In this category, restaurants for exceptional cuisine that is "worth a diversion", the D.O.M. (São Paulo), Evvai (São Paulo), Lasai (Rio de Janeiro), Oro (Rio de Janeiro) and Tuju (São Paulo) have renewed their award. They remain the most attractive culinary references in Brazil.

New starred restaurants

The 2025 selection continues to grow, with four new additions to this category: two in Rio de Janeiro and two in São Paulo. This brings the total number of restaurants with a MICHELIN star to twenty.

Casa 201, Rio de Janeiro: Everything about this restaurant - located in Jardim Botânico (Botanical Gardens) - feels like home, right down to its name. João Paulo Frankenfeld, a chef from Rio de Janeiro who travelled to Lyon to train at the Institut Paul Bocuse, returned home to work as a chef at Le Cordon Bleu and from there decided to open his own restaurant. Here he proposes aromatic, technically complex dishes on a constantly evolving tasting menu that always emphasises seasonal Brazilian ingredients and incorporates subtle nods to French gastronomy, reminiscent of his years in Europe.

KANOE, São Paulo: Located in Jardins, this Japanese restaurant is the perfect choice for those looking for a gastronomic club experience. In its neat, minimalist interior, dominated by a large counter for nine diners, chef Tadashi Shiraishi is the master of ceremonies, explaining each dish on his omakase menu and bringing the culinary knowledge of his ancestors to life for diners' palates. The chef treats each product with infinite respect and presents them as true jewels.

Oseille, Rio de Janeiro: Thomas Troisgros represents the latest generation of a renowned line of chefs of French origin. The name of this restaurant refers to a famous dish created by his grandfather, the great chef Pierre Troisgros. Located above his restaurant Toto - also in the MICHELIN Guide - this minimalist space is centred around a large U-shaped counter with 16 seats surrounding the panoramic kitchen, where everyone can view his work in detail. The unique, modern tasting menu combines the best local produce with the most sophisticated French culinary techniques.

Ryo Gastronomia, São Paulo: After a thorough renovation that preserves the minimalist Japanese aesthetic and that special essence that connects us with nature, this restaurant is experiencing renewed success. Although there are also several tables, the best way to enjoy the experience is at the counter, where guests can watch chef Edson Yamashita at work. His omakase menu is all about ritual, delicacy, respect, flavour ... and almost surgical cuts of incredible precision.

Green stars

The city of São Paulo - home to the country's three restaurants with this distinction(A Casa do Porco, Corrutela and Tuju) - continues to position itself as the main Brazilian benchmark for good sustainable practices and leads in terms of true ecological awareness.

Five new Bib Gourmand restaurants

With five new additions to the 2025 selection, all located in São Paulo - A Casa do Porco, Cepa, Clandestina, Jacó andManioca da Mata - there are now a total of 40 restaurants with the iconic Bib Gourmand: seven in Rio de Janeiro and 33 in São Paulo.

With these twelve new additions, the total number of recommended restaurants rises to 84, with 30 in Rio de Janeiro and 54 in São Paulo. Among them, there are options for all tastes, from those that highlight the flavours of traditional Brazilian cuisine, such as Sal Gastronomia, to those that focus more on seafood, such as OCYÁ Ilha, to those that take diners to faraway destinations without the risk of jet lag: Italy(Babbo Osteria, Giulietta Carni, Marena Cucina and Trattoria Evvai), Japan(Goya Zushi and Shin Zushi), Spain(Cala del Tanit) or Portugal(Quinta da Henriqueta).

Newly recommended restaurants in Rio de Janeiro: Babbo Osteria, OCYÁ Ilha, Quinta da Henriqueta and Rufino Parrilla.

Newly recommended restaurants in São Paulo: Cala del Tanit, Giulietta Carni, Goya Zushi, Le Jardin, Marena Cucina, Sal Gastronomia, Shin Zushi and Trattorita Evvai.

The three MICHELIN Special Award Winners 2025

With its awards, the MICHELIN Guide recognises the professionals who, with their daily commitment and passion, elevate the customer experience and give them wonderful visibility.

Young Chef Award - Iago Jacomussi(Jacó, São Paulo) : It is quite extraordinary to open a restaurant at only 26 years old, but not surprising in the case of Iago Jacomussi. A graduate of Le Cordon Bleu, the chef has worked in prestigious starred restaurants, not only in Brazil (Evvai, Maní and Tangará Jean-Georges), but also in Portugal and Denmark (Belcanto in Lisbon and Jordnær in Gentofte, near Copenhagen). At the head of a very young team, Iago is committed to a casual atmosphere with dishes to share. The technically advanced cuisine has Brazilian roots and is enriched by interesting references to other cultures around the world.

Sommelier Award - Marcelo da Fonseca Lopes Costa(Evvai, São Paulo): The interest in oenology continues to grow and is reflected in the teams, with increasingly educated professionals seeking to enrich the gastronomic experience through well thought-out pairings. Marcelo da Fonseca, Evvai's young sommelier, is a graduate of the Wine & Spirit Education Trust. He is characterised by the elegance, friendliness and enthusiasm with which he advises guests to discover the best local and international wines according to their tastes.

Service Award - Rodrigo Cavalcante(Tuju, São Paulo): The synchronicity, elegance and personalised service of Tuju, which works with the precision of a Swiss watch, are under the direction of maître Rodrigo Cavalcante. He is the one who presents the menu and explains the concepts or hidden details behind each dish created by chef Ivan Ralston. His way of working, leading the team by example and with discretion, elevates the experience and turns it into something magical.
