Kitchen Impossible: Tim Mälzer versus Martin Klein
In the third episode of the current season of Kitchen Impossible, Tim Mälzer is challenged by two-star chef Martin Klein from Hangar-7 in Salzburg. Mälzer won the first duel in 2020. In the rematch, he will be allowed to work as a guest chef at Hangar 7 if he wins. Martin tries to distract him with a helicopter flight to Tamino Grampelhuber, the chef at the "Steegwirt" in Bad Goisern.
The challenges
Tim Mälzer in Bad Goisern on Lake Hallstatt (Austria): Tim Mälzer and 2-star chef Martin Klein from the legendary Hangar-7 in Salzburg face off for the second time as part of "Kitchen Impossible". Mälzer won the first duel in 2020. The rematch is under a special star. If Tim wins the programme, he will be a guest chef at Hangar 7. To prevent him from winning, Martin entices him with a breathtaking helicopter flight to his holiday destination and favourite fishing spot - to Tamino Grampelhuber, chef at the renowned World Heritage inn "Steegwirt" in Bad Goisern on Lake Hallstatt. But while Martin is lulled into a sense of security and leaves Tim to his own devices, Tim spins an unprecedented comeback for his rival Martin on "Kitchen Impossible" in the background.
Tim Mälzer in Mautern an der Donau (Austria): In his second challenge, Tim is also challenged by Martin in his adopted home of Austria. While Martin is in Salzburg, Tim chugs along the Danube to Spitz, where he is served a dish by Martin's good friend and one of the best chefs in the Alps, Thomas Dorfer, in the pits. Thomas ate this culinary highlight for his wedding and it contains plenty of stumbling blocks, such as the "Reinling". A traditional Gugelhupf from Dorfer's native Carinthia, which not only has to be served with the soup, but also has to be prepared in a second variation. In full operation and during the challenge, Martin doesn't miss the opportunity to send some members of the "Kitchen Impossible" family to visit Tim.
Martin Klein in Bad Goisern on Lake Hallstatt (Austria): Martin Klein accompanied Tim Mälzer to the Steegwirt on Lake Hallstatt to confront him with his challenge. While Tim analyses his box, he gets into conversation with the original chef Tamino Grampelhuber and hatches a perfidious plan to surprise Martin - an unprecedented twist in the history of "Kitchen Impossible". Spontaneously and on the spot, Tim decides to let Martin cook a dish from his friend Tamino and leaves the choice of dish up to Tamino. He chooses a soup that Martin has never eaten at his place before. Martin is now challenged by Tim in two ways, because to make matters worse, he will be standing in the kitchen with Tim and cooking his challenge alongside him.
Martin Klein in Tallinn (Estonia): Martin Klein is sent by Tim Mälzer to the Estonian capital of Tallinn - to meet none other than 2-star chef and favourite rival Matthias Diether from season 9! As skilful as Tim Mälzer is, he took a look at the guest chef calendar of Restaurant Ikarus in Hangar-7 and found out that Matthias Diether has been invited as a guest chef for one of the coming months. The special confusion tactic is that Martin Klein will be served the black box in his home town of Salzburg. The cheesecake à la Mimolette is one of the six courses that Martin will soon be cooking at Ikarus. Will he be able to come close to the flavour of his future guest chef's dish without any prior knowledge?
Martin Klein in profile
Age: 48
Place of birth: Strasbourg
Martin is generally not a fan of "trends". He thinks a chef should always look around and "pick up" something everywhere. Martin loves local and creative cuisine - and his guests appreciate this. He attaches great importance to seasonality in his cuisine and "working with the seasons". He is a great lover of fish. Loup de mer fried crispy on the skin is his favourite. He likes to drink and serve a glass of Pinot Gris with it. Martin had a close relationship with his grandparents, who influenced him in culinary terms. One set of grandparents worked in the catering trade themselves, the other had a butcher's shop; Martin spent a lot of time with them when his own parents were at work. He has fond memories of offal dishes, as his grandad often brought kidneys, hearts, brains etc. from the butcher's shop. Original quote: "Even if others don't like offal, I have very positive associations with it."
- In season 5, Martin Klein was narrowly defeated by Tim. In season 9 of "Kitchen Impossible", Martin Klein appeared as the O chef - in a duel between Hans-Jörg Bachmeier and Tim Mälzer. Bachmeier had the task of cooking both scallops with gooseberry and rose and white asparagus panna cotta with grapefruit and lobster in "Ikarus". Now it's time for a rematch in the anniversary season.
