The Esszimmer becomes THE CLOUD

Plans for a new restaurant at BMW Welt in Munich

MUNICH. The fine dining restaurant under the roof of BMW Welt will open in summer 2025 as "THE CLOUD by Käfer" with a completely new concept. Jens Madsen will take over the position of head chef. The kitchen will be supported by restaurant manager Mona Röthig, formerly of Tantris Maison Culinaire, and sommelier Luigi Pecchia. CULINARY NOMADISM describes the basis of the new concept, which combines different culinary traditions, skills and spices from all over the world with the best local products in an independent cuisine. In the first year, Jens Madsen brings the flavours and textures of South and East Africa to Munich. He gathered the inspiration for his dishes on a research trip through South Africa lasting several weeks, during which he was able to get to know the right preparation techniques, regional specialities and the fascinating personalities at the country's pots and pans. "I take what touches me on my travels, what changes my thinking, and let it become part of my cuisine," explains Jens Madsen.

"With THE CLOUD by Käfer, we are opening a new, forward-looking chapter in gastronomy at BMW Welt. From the very beginning, our aim has been to make the fine dining restaurant one of the best gourmet addresses in Germany. With Jens Madsen, a rising star of the next generation is now taking over and we are looking forward to an inspiring future with him and his entire team," says Michael Käfer.

Pop-up event in April

As a foretaste of his signature style, Jens Madsen and his team are inviting guests to the exclusive pop-up event "A Nomad's Path" at BMW Group Classic from 10 April to 24 May, where they can gain an initial insight into the team's philosophy and creativity and experience the unique combination of global flavours and regional ingredients for themselves. "With the A Nomad's Path concept, I want to share the journey to the opening with my guests and bring them closer to the soul of my cuisine. I want them to feel like they're at mum's: soul food and sharing dishes," says Jens Madsen, who was born in Tanzania and moved to Chiemgau in Bavaria at the age of eight, where his gastronomic career began. From there, he was drawn to some of the best kitchens in the world - Launceston Place in London under Tim Allen, the Haerlin in the Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten in Hamburg under Christoph Rüffer, the Überfahrt on Lake Tegernsee under Christian Jürgens, the Vuede Monde in Melbourne, and finally to the EssZimmer in the BMW Welt in Munich under Bobby Bräuer - where he not only learnt technical skills at the highest level, but also respect for regional ingredients and the art of combining tradition and innovation.
