JAN as the best German restaurant follows in second place / 22 restaurants form the absolute top group

The World's 50 Best Restaurants 2024 - Gin Mare Art of Hospitality Award

Restaurant Plénitude has confirmed first place in the Restaurant-Ranglisten.de World Restaurant Rankings 2024. Arnaud Donckele's Parisian restaurant took the top spot for the first time last year. It is followed in second place by the best German restaurant, JAN in Munich, which was in 19th place last year. Jan Hartwig's restaurant shares this place with Schauenstein in Fürstenau, Switzerland, which confirms its position from the previous year.

The three restaurants lead a group of 22 restaurants in total, which can contribute top marks from two professional restaurant guides to the calculation of the ranking. Last year, the number was 14, but the group has grown since three scores from classic guides were used in the previous year. However, this put restaurants from countries with fewer guides at too great a disadvantage, so Restaurant-Ranglisten.de adjusted the calculation method.

The world ranking list is based on the evaluation of the current editions of the professional restaurant guides, as well as the results of well-known voting rankings such as The World's 50 Best and Le Chef magazine. The two best scores are taken into account and converted into a score. If several restaurants then achieve the same score, the scores from popular voting portals such as Opinonated about Dining, Tripadvisor and Google are used to determine the ranking. This means that a lack of top marks in the professional guides cannot compensate for top ratings on the user portals; instead, they merely lead to differentiation for restaurants that receive the same marks in the classic guides.

As in the previous year, fourth place went to Sonnora in Dreis, which it shares with Schwarzwaldstube (Baiersbronn, previously 5th place). Sixth place went to the Geranium in Copenhagen, after coming third last year. In seventh place is Cheval Blanc by Peter Knogl in Basel. Eighth place is shared by the restaurants Frantzén (Stockholm, Sweden, tenth place last year), Auberge du Vieux Puits (Fontjoncouse, France) and Régis et Jaques Marcon (St Bonnet le Froid, France). They are followed by the German restaurants Victor's Fine Dining by Christian Bau in Perl-Nennig (6th place last year) in eleventh place and Aqua (Wolfsburg, previously 7th place) and Rutz (Berlin, 31st place last year) in twelfth place. 14th place is shared by Flocons de Sel (Megève, France) and Restaurant de l'Hôtel de Ville (Crissier, Switzerland). The 16th place is shared by Maaemo (Oslo, Norway, last year 18th place) and Single Thread (Healdsburg, USA). They are followed by L'Enclume (Cartmel, UK) in 18th place, Benu (San Francisco, USA) and Smyth (Chicago, USA) in 19th place. Le Bernardin (New York, USA, previously in 12th place) and L'Ambroisie (Paris, France) in 22nd place complete the top group,

In addition to the restaurants in the top 100, other German establishments are also represented: Schanz (Piesport, rank 24, previous year 22), The Table (Hamburg, rank 36, previous year 47), Vendôme (Bergisch Gladbach, rank 39, previous year 23), Bareiss (Baiersbronn, rank 40, previous year 33), Haerlin (Hamburg, rank 87, previous year 84), Ikigai (Elmau, rank 91, new).

Germany is represented by a total of twelve restaurants, one more than in the previous year. Only France is more successful with 23 restaurants. That is four more than last year. Just as strong as Germany are restaurants from the USA in the top 100 (+2), followed by Spain (+1) with eleven restaurants. In addition, Italy (-1) with eight restaurants, the PR China (+1), Switzerland (+1) and Austria (-3) with six each, Denmark (-2), Singapore (+2), Japan (-6), Belgium (-3) with two each and Sweden (unchanged), Norway (unchanged) and the Netherlands (-2) with one each are represented in the top 100 restaurants in the world.
