The gourmet portal, www.restaurant-ranglisten.de, evolved from the merging of the Gustav Volkenborn's Restaurant Hitlists and the catalogue of top chefs at www.die-besten-koeche.com. The result is a comprehensive and unique online range of information in the gastronomy sector which has yet to be equalled for its depth of information and user friendliness.
Our Roots
In 1988 Gustav Volkenborn (1941-2006) came up with the idea of calculating an overall evaluation using all the major restaurants guides. This was because of the heterogeneity of the assessing carried out by the various guides. For this all the awards given were converted into a standardized system of points similar to the French schools’ grading system of 0-20. These were then weighted according to their dispersion and significance and totalled for each restaurant. This way it was possible to produce a certain level of comparison amongst those guides which had become increasingly important over the years and which had advanced to a high level of recognition.
Hannes Buchner’s (1964) approach was different. In 2004, using information he had gathered from his many visits to restaurants in Germany and abroad he set up his own database of chefs (www.die-besten-koeche.com) with lots of details about the makers and creators behind the scenes. After the database expanded thanks to the cooperation of enthusiastic gourmet chefs it was published online without much further ado. In the ensuing years the basis was set up which turned the tiny database into a European gourmet portal of such international standing that both gourmets and experts were really excited.
The Makers
When Gustav Volkenborn died in 2006 Hannes Buchner took on his restaurant hitlists and since then has operated the platform together with Christian Stromann (1976). The owner of a digital communication agency in Berlin and founder of the gastronomy portal Sternefresser.de Stromann helped to put the gourmet portal’s internet presence on a professional footing. .
In 2009 Buchner Stromann GbR was changed into Gourmet-Portal GmbH. The aim is to make the portal available to an ever larger following than has been possible up to now.
